BY THE time Gideon finished with work, he had made up his mind about a few things. Most and foremost that continuing an affair with Reed Kelly would be a big mistake. Gideon had just been kicked out of one relationship. He hadn’t even replaced everything he’d lost in that breakup. Clothes, dishes, dental floss, self-respect. The last thing he needed was to get involved with a man who up until a month before had managed to convince himself he was straight for twentysome years before deciding whumping the wienie was really the way he should be going after all.

Gideon would not have thought it possible, but he actually seemed to have found the one man in the world who was more fucked up than he was.

And who was to say Reed’s ex—the illustrious Carol—wouldn’t worm her way back into the picture at any moment. Reed obviously felt guilty about leaving her. He clearly still had issues about leading her astray for four years in a marriage that could best be described as dishonest and at worst as one big flapping fuckdoodle lie from the get-go, until he dumped her like a hot potato the minute he decided he wanted to sample a few peckers instead.

There was also the matter of fragility. Not Reed’s fragility, but Gideon’s. He freely admitted he was lonely and susceptible to a little kindness and attention such as Reed had shown him the night before. He was also still heartsore after being deceived by his ex and still furious about all those socks he had just bought and not even worn yet when the sly little prick tossed them into a donations bin, no doubt snickering maliciously like Muttley in a Dick Dastardly cartoon while he did it. And the cruelest of ironies was that the donations bin belonged to the Salvation Army! One of the most homophobic organizations on the planet. Couldn’t Manny at least have given his new socks to an AIDS charity so Gideon would know they were being used by someone who needed them, someone down on his luck, someone deserving of a helping hand, someone gay.

As if all that wasn’t enough to nip this new relationship in the bud, Reed was also a redhead! Gingers weren’t Gideon’s cup of tea. They never had been. Although he had to admit, Reed Kelly pretty much undid that particular aversion. Jeez, the guy was hot!

Gideon knew himself well enough to know that if he allowed himself to spend more time with Reed, even a few minutes, his slut gene would kick in and he’d find his head in the guy’s pants again. He couldn’t just refuse to see him, though. He still had to keep the promise of hooking up Reed’s computer for him. That would probably afford them a good thirty minutes of alone time—less if Gideon hurried, or more if he purposely fiddled around, acting like he didn’t know what he was doing.

Gideon considered all this while plodding up the six flights of stairs to his apartment.
